I bought a used iPhone 2G and received it in the mail yesterday.
I am trying to update the iPhone in iTunes to 2.2.1. It seems to have updated to 2.1.1 (I may have done this update myself but I'm not positive). However, it doesn't want to go to 2.2.1 and I have no idea why. I click "Check for Updates" in iTunes and it says that my version 2.1.1 is the current version which I don't think that it is.

Any ideas on how I fix this?

Sorry, rough day at the office, I read it as all the same. :) What version iTunes do you have? Where are you in the world? What version OS X do you have?

Once we have this, hopefully we'll be able to help some more. As an alternative, you could always download the firmware at:
http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite...90127.Mmni6/iPhone1,1_2.2.1_5H11_Restore.ipsw
and load it manually by pressing Alt/Option while clicking Restore/Update.

Help?

I also downloaded the .ipsw.zip file and opened it which unzipped a folder. From iTunes I tried to install the files but it wouldn't allow me to select any of the files.

I think 8.0.2 is the latest iTunes though the update still isn't working. iTunes thinks my software is up to date ("this version of the iPhone software 2.1.1 is the current version"). So I'm stuck at 2.1.1.

Help? :(

I think you downloaded it with Firefox. I believe I read that it adds a .zip extension to it. It shouldn't be a .zip file, but a .ipsw file. Can you try to download again? :)
