Hi all. This is probably one of those threads where the first reply will be a link to a solution, making me look a bit silly. But what the heck, I've tried every way I can think of and even, would you believe it, searched for clues on the Internet. For about 36 hours.

Iphone 6s plus, screen smashed. Device to be replaced.

The final thing I did with the damaged iPhone was to make an iCloud backup, using the network of the place I went to have the phone repaired, so as to have a backup as complete as possible when I got my replacement.

When I finally got my replacement unit, I joyously went forth to restore from my icloud backup. But the one I wanted was greyed out in the list of available backups. Why? Ah, of course, the damaged unit, from which I performed the icloud backup, had iOS 9.2 beta (3, probably). Very well. I'll set my replacement device up as a new iPhone and update it to 9.2.

Two obstacles have then alternatively occurred, whatever way I have tried to work around the problems (this includes any combination and succession of restoring/updating, from iTunes or on-device, OTA, hard resets, recovery mode and the devil's great-grandmother).

  1. I'm not sure how the English error message would sound, but something like "This unit is not qualified for the requested build" appears, both when trying to update to, and when trying to restore to, iOS 9.2 beta 4. I am directed to an Apple support document. It asks me to go into Terminal to examine the hosts file, and write the following code: sudo nano /private/etc/hosts. Enter, password, bla bla bla, then: "Look for an entry containing «gs.apple.com. Add "#" and space («# ») before the gs.apple.com entry." But there is no such entry in my hosts file. Dead end.
  2. I tried to use beta 3 to restore. It worked, and this allowed me to chose my desired backup file and things started to happen. After the white screen with a blue progress bar and an estimation of the time left, came a white screen, black logo, grey progress bar … that didn't fill up by a pixel even, not even overnight. Dead end.
Step 1 has been recreated in iTunes on another machine as well. Not step 2, however.

What I have been allowed is to make an ordinary restore from the latest backup in iTunes. But it's a month old. It's not the one I want or need.

I want to upgrade my new device to 9.2 and then install my desired backup.
