I bought a Mac mini a few days ago at an Apple Store in Japan. Even though the store staff says you can use Apple Pay, if you attempt to use Apple Card through Apple Pay to make the purchase directly from the iPhone, the purchase won't go through on their handheld point-of-sale equipment.

I live here. I had the same problem a year ago buying an iPhone. It seems that the point-of-sale devices used in Apple Stores in Japan can't accept payments made through Apple Pay using an Apple Card.

Not a big deal in the end--using the titanium Apple Card works, and you still get 3% back. But what if I didn't have the titanium card on me? Apple can't process purchases made through their own payment system with their own card at their own stores? That's not a good image.

It made for an awkward conversation with the sales staff, although I knew it would happen. After nearly a year, they haven't resolved the issue.

Maybe it has to do with the use of a different standard in Japan, called Suica, for contactless payments.

I think it has something to do with specific point-of-sale terminals. I have a digital Suica and Pasmo in the Wallet app along with the Apple Card. The Apple Card does work at other POI terminals in Japan Through Apple Pay.

Yeah, the POS terminals that use Japan’s own Suica contactless technology instead of the standard NFC technology used elsewhere. Apple Card or any other non-japanese card wouldn’t work on those.

Yeah. I’m surprised the POS terminals at the Apple Store here don’t support standard NFC, whereas the ones in convenience stores and some pubs and restaurants here do.

There’s a newer, roundish POS terminal I’ve used here that supports both. It features the paywave logo prominently on top. I think it’s made by Panasonic. Funny though, many clerks here still insist I put my paywave debit or credit cards into the slot and enter my PIN, even for small purchases.
