Can't view files from external HD

I got an imac yesterday and it's wonderful, only problem is I need to copy some stuff from my external HD (NTFS format) to the mac. I plug it in and it doesn't show up (tried a little 1 gig usb drive and it worked like a charm). The HD does show up in the disk utility thing though. Any ideas on how I can work this out?

I would just use my old windows machine to make data dvd backups, but half the reason for purchasing my mac was because my old pc doesn't really work anymore.. at all.

Any advice would be a huge help, thanks!

well mac doesnt work with a ntfs formatted drive, i know both windows and mac work with a fat32 formatted drive though. you can reformat your drive to fat 32, but as far as im aware THIS WILL REMOVE ALL DATA ON THE DRIVE!! so if you dont want to lose data, i would porbably see what other people suggest,

im new to mac aswell, sorry i couldnt have been much more help.

I've been reading and as I understand it the only problem should be with writing to the drive, reading shouldn't be a problem. Thanks anyway, much appreciated.

ntfs/osx

There is limited ntfs support shipped with OSX. You should be able to read from the drive but writing is not recommended (make sure you backup your data first if you're going to to try it).

If it's not mounting the drive automatically you'll probably need to use the command line to mount the drive.
