I purchased my AirPods Max in June of 2021. I've worn them probably 4-5 times a week since then, for several hours a day.
Today I replaced the original ear pads with Apple brand replacement ear pads. I've got to say they are now back to their original comfort level.
Over time, of course, I found it difficult to detect the comfort and fit degradation. So don't cheap out and do consider keeping a replacement set on-hand.
Heck, I went "crazy" I slapped on green ear pads on my Space Gray AirPods Max
