The 3GS was just finally released today and I picked one up. Is it still necessary to capture these in order to ensure future jailbreaking capabilities?

I did it since, if anything, it becomes useless and I go along with my life. It's simple and I like knowing that if needed I have them. Just follow iClarified.com

You should capture them just incase you need them in the future. But I believe purplera1n will jailbreak the device with just one button press, I don't think it needs those files.

Totally unnecessary for the 3G - don't waste your time.

i jailbroke mine with purplera1n, without knowing that i need these files. i'll have to restore one of these days to capture them, just in case.

i heard it takes a long time to do, is that true? i mean the whole dfu restore process.

thanks

No need to restore! Just follow the iClarified guide and you're golden.

Here's my timeline:

1. 9:30 am FedEx truck delivers iPhone.
2. 9:35 am iPhone in DFU mode, iBEC and iBSS files captured.
3. 9:37 am iPhone booted up and activation started
4. 9:38 am While iPhone is activating, iBEC and iBSS files put into encrypted DMG and uploaded to iDisk. ;-)

With 3.0.1 out just now, can I still download 3.0 and do the restore and dfu restore on my 3GS or am I SOL?

Yall are both wrong. You don't need these files to jailbreak, there will alway be a way to JB. These files are needed to restore your phone from a jailbreak. It's possible that you wont be able to restore your phone in future apple firmwares without these files. These files are sent to apple's servers when you restore, if your ibes and ibss files are different apple will know, and wont allow a restore.

This was posted yesterday from apple: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743

Inability to apply future software updates: Some unauthorized modifications have caused damage to the iPhone OS that is not repairable. This can result in the hacked iPhone or iPod touch becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone OS update is installed.

I'm in the same boat as maximus, I went ahead and jailbroke with purplera1n before i read those files.. Am i now screwed for future updates? Or can i still get them from my phone? I already restored it so I dont mind restoring 2-3 more times..

Any feedback appreciated.

I'm loving this phone and i want to get future updates for it!
