Capture One 11 released

Looks like I was late to the party in mentioning the beta. PhaseOne release C1 ver. 11.

I'll personally look at this, but given the high price tag, and my humble needs, I'm not sure I can justify spending that much

I was thinking about the fact that in years past PhaseOne used to offer the current version for 1/2 for a period of time, right before it releases the next version but they didn't do it this time. I think the reason is due to their inclusion of subscriptions. The deep discount conflicts with their subscription model, which I think is to expensive anyways. You can't tell users to use the subscription model, but then offer people who want the perpetual license a deal that is much cheaper.

Their mask edge refining stuff looks good. But, if they had edge aware brush and eraser, much of the edge redefining might not be necessary.

I have the trial going, and I'm liking how how it works in relation to my workflow, its features line up nicely with my wants and needs.

I've said previously that I'll be switching over to something in 2018 and will continue with lightroom to view my older images. I'm liking what it has, but the price tag is a major stopping point.

Btw, what were you using before you switched to C1?

I have the subscription and it wont let me upgrade to 11... In the process of assessing it as an alternative to LR...

Of all the alternatives to Lightroom at the moment, this would be the one that could potentially get me to move. The problem is there has to be a compelling reason to do it: either it is better, or it is less expensive. Now, it might actually be better than Lightroom, but from what I can tell from my brief look at it, it probably isn't. The pricing model is the biggest problem, though. $300 a year to buy or $180 a year to rent makes it a much pricier option than Lightroom. Because of that I can't see putting in the time to learn it well enough on trial to even see if it would work for me.

I was using Lightroom.

I like the workflow of C1 more than LR. That's very subjective, though, it all depends on how one likes to work. I find it faster and easier to get what I want out of an edit with C1. Also, C1 seems to handle my Fuji RAW files better than LR, especially foliage. General sharpness is noticeably better. I don't have issues with Olympus, Canon, or Sony files in LR. But since I primarily shoot Fuji, I find C1's handling of Fuji files to be superior.

I know you can pre-pay for the entire year and that helps a bit on the overall cost, but I think the perpetual license is more to my liking since that was one major reason why I dropped LR.

I dislike the subscription model, so I'll buy it. I appreciate Capture One making it easy.

I am finding Capture One sharpening more pleasing to my eye. I find that the default preset controls on import a little closer to where I will end up post processing than in LR.

However. I have been using LR so long now that I am struggling to find the motivation to want to learn the C1 tool. It feels weird at the moment. I took out the annual pre-pay to try it.

I am finding I am still jumping out to Photoshop so my dilemma is that I dont want a workflow involving BOTH adobe and C1P as that is ridiculous. So while I play with PS, I have to find a way to continue with LR so that my costs are only £105 a year not three times that.

Bear in mind I am in my consolidation phase where I am getting realistic about my capabilities and all this kit I have amassed and I am pairing it down to what I actually need so my mindset is in penny pinch mode not ultimate best solution mode. So I may be coming at it from a different angle.

Very wise. Our mortgage is done. So the money I have sitting in banks, ISA's and the like is pretty much depreciating as well! I think I'm the only one who cheers when the Interest rate goes up!

For me, its less about knowing all the tricks, and little things and more about how I can customize the workflow, how does the app work within my wants and needs. Does it do everything I want it to do. I can pretty much guarantee that it has more technical ability in editing photos then I ever will need, so its more about fitting into how I want an app of this nature to work

Besides, I'll have 60 days because I'll download the version 11 trial

I also like the journey that C1P has come on.

LR has been developed from the single person perspective. It was developed as a post shoot, upload and go workflow where as C1P evolved from tethered shooting in a studio scenario so it has subtle differences in the way it works that actually make my using it potentially easier for a real simple reason... my main editing rig is a Windows workstation but my preferred mobile solution is my MacBook Pro. C1P allows me to use both of them at the same time against the same images on shared storage. This is something LR cant let me do unless I make the move to the new cloud based model - I work in IT, I dont want to do that with Adobe for at least the next 2-3 major outages they get to learn from....

As for Pixelmator, yes I can probably do it but then I am swapping a £105 a year solution for a £180 a year solution that I dont know my way round yet. I dont know... I am rambling sorry...

Thats my plan. Once the mortgage is gone, and no one can take our house off us then I will be more bold. I will start my own company, I will buy a Porsche and treat myself to a new whatever-lux whenever I fancy.... just need this ball and chain off me first!

Paid mine off about 10 years ago due to moving out of London and Mrs AFB's mother passing away in her 50's.

Yes it's a nice feeling. But you then start to think about pensions and savings. They all perform pretty poor. Especially if you don't know much about them.

As for depreciation unless it's a house or a classic Porsche (and then you have to maintain it!) everything goes down in value.

I'm lucky that I paid so little for most of my gear, I've already had my monies worth.
But I could still get more than I paid for it.
As for my bodies, well they do what I need. Having a smaller lighter one won't make much difference when it's attached to pro glass.

I just spent $69 for the upgrade to C1P 11 (Sony). It seems about the same as 10 as far as the way I use it. On my older iMac, it's not any faster. Still need some time to work with it though.
