I got the iPhone 16 Pro on release day. I have a 2024 Lexus ES300h that has wireless Car Play (which is how I have used it 99% of the time). Since the update to 18.0.1., it seems like I've been having quite a few issues with my message notifications popping up.

Previously, on my iPhone 13 Pro and (if I recall correctly) prior to the update to 18.0.1 on the 16P, whether I was listening to SiriusXM, one of the apps on my phone, etc., if I got a text message, the banner would pop up on the bottom of the screen and I had the option to tap it to listen to it, or just let the banner go away after a few seconds.

I noticed yesterday (following updating to 18.0.1 the night before) that the banner was no longer popping up. If I opened the phone to the Lock Screen, I would see the banner for the message notification and when I would go into CarPlay on the dash, it would show the badge count on the app icon. So, it was just that the banner never popped up on the in-car dash.

I tried restarting the car, restarting the phone, disconnecting and forgetting the phone and re-adding it to CarPlay and none of that seems to have fixed it.

I checked in Notifications>Messages and "Show in CarPlay" is/was toggled on.

I have never have "Announce Notifications" turned on in Siri because I hate it, but that's also never prevented the banner from popping up in the past, or as recently as earlier this week.

In the past, I feel like this has happened from time-to-time over the years but it was usually resolved the next time I got in the car and/or connected the phone again. That doesn't seem to be resolving the issue this time around so far,

I haven't had much luck searching online - a lot of the "fixes" seem to be around making sure "announce notifications" is turned on, but that's not what I'm wanting to have happen here. And the somewhat related info I have found online seems to be mostly from before iOS 18, so potentially somewhat "outdated."

Is anyone having similar issues and/or know of a fix for this?

I am having the same issue with my 14 Pro. It’s not just Messages notifications for me - if I get a calendar notification when on a screen other than the CarPlay screen, I hear the notification sound, but the notification isn’t displayed. I don’t have a fix for this. Hopefully a future update will resolve this as it’s pretty annoying.

CarPlay has been screwed by iOS 18. Funny how many bugs were introduced given so little has been improved. For instance our new feature to make home screen icons look gross like android.

Yes, I am having this same issue on my new car. I’ve seen some people say on the Apple forum pages that Apple has done this on purpose and that their answer is to have Siri automatically announced your messages. But this does not work when you don’t want your entire car hearing your messages by announcement…in the middle of a song or podcast. I want my banners back and then I can decide if I want to hear it or not. If in fact Apple did this on purpose I do not understand why. It required many e tea steps to get to your messages, which means taking your eyes off the road. I’ve resigned to not using CarPlay and am just using my car’s media system to show me my messages. Shame on Apple for doing this in ios18!

Thought this was just happening to me until I came across this thread. Same issue here. When not on the CarPlay screen I miss all notifications, except incoming phone calls. Still an issue on iOS 18.3.1

Urgh. Was hoping this was one of the “bugs” they fixed. Guess not. I was told to file a bug complaint on the Apple Support page. I’ve done that but to no avail. I’m beginning to wonder if they’re ever going to fix this. It seems that all Apple is concerned about is AI now, and we’ve lost the basic functions of our phone that we’ve all come to rely on.
