Car power supply too much for iPhone?

A few years ago I hard-wired my car for my iPod. This is a factory kit that plugs into the dock and keeps my iPod charged. It has worked on two iPods without any issues. I'd like to know if the charge is appropriate for my 'new-to-me' 1st gen iPhone.

I don't want to fry it but have a couple long trips coming and don't want to lug my Macbook with me or purchase a separate charger.

On an additional front, I also have the ORIGINAL charger for the iPod that was essentially a firewire charger (firewire end goes into the plug/outlet) with a dock plug on the end. It was fine for syncing EARLY iPods and for charging later ones.

Would that be an option as a charger for the iPhone or is the juice in that too much?

Just trying to find solutions to keep the iPhone charged and happy without lugging around too much stuff.

Best i can say is this...
I have the Belkin car charger that was purchased for my iPod 4th gen. It charged my 2nd gen Nano and 5th gen iPod fine. It also charges my iPhone 1st gen fine. I get the "wrong accessory" message, but it doesn't bother me. I also used to dock said phone in the Universal Dock in my truck before I removed it, that was powered by the Belkin charger. According to Belkin it wouldn't fry the phone so I went for it and kept the e-mail handy in case it did.

I would have to say that the cable should be fine, but I would certainly be inclined to ask. I've read here once where someone said his phone was fried after he turned the car on while the phone was plugged in. I normally unplug the phone first, like the old adage of turning off my air before I start the car, just to be safe. I've forgotten once or twice and wound up ok.

Sorry that's not a definite answer. If you know the maker of that dock connector that would be more helpful. Right now I think anyone else who answers will answer just as blindly as I have.

The firewire (12v) charging capability has been removed from the iPhone 3G. As a result no products will charge your iPhone 3G that used the applicable pins on the 30 pin dock connector for firewire charging. The likelihood is that the hardwire setup you have for your stereo will not charge your iPhone but may still allow control of it.

I have the Alpine iva-w205 head unit that has full speed ipod control. Regrettably, my iPhone 3G will not charge however I can control it through the head unit.

This topic has been discussed rather extensively in the accessories forum, you may want to visit there. There are a couple companies out there that are supposedly making an adapter/converter to retrofit existing charging accessories but none are out yet.

iphone is only the 1st gen. Car charger has worked fine. Have been careful not to start car with it attached. Thanks for your help.
