Carbon Copy and target being larger than source somehow

Been using CCC and these drives for a year or two (with my 2012 cMP) but today oddly CCC wouldn't play then I noticed somehow my target drive (they are both 4TB) has a lot less space than my source drive ! My back up drive is never used except for this weekly backup so I have no idea how it could be using 100s gigs more space - you lot any ideas ?

To actually get it to back up at all as originally the destination drive literally had 20 gb free I had to remove some files

Is it possible that the setting regarding leaving root level items on the destination untouched is keeping some old things, deleted from the source, from being deleted? That's happened to me.
