How do you go about restoring your drive with CCC? All it does when I select my drive is it boots from the drive which is very slow so it runs MacOS from my external drive.

How do I go about booting from the drive so I can restore my backup.

Do exactly what you did. Yes, the external willl be dog slow depending on type (SSD vs spinning) and interface (Thunderbolt, usb 3, or usb 2). Once booted run Disk Utility if needed to format the internal drive, then run CCC to clone the external to the internal. When done, shut down and boot from the internal drive. This is exactly what I did when upgrading my MBA internal SSD. I had an external thunderbolt SSD so it went fairly fast.

1)Stick external backed up drive in Mac
2)Start Mac+holding ALT button
3)Choose backed up volume(external) as your startup disk
4)Launch CCC
5)Choose your external backed up drive(currently you are booting from) in "SOURCE" field, choose your Mac HDD/SDD in "DESTINATION" field.
6)Click CLONE.
7)Wait
8) Restart Mac
9) Done
