I had to pop into Central London.

I tapped in for my first leg of the journey, with my iPhone.

Tapped out & continued the rest of my journey with my Apple Watch.

I’ve now been charged not only the maximum for a contactless journey on a single day, but also an additional fare.

Apparently this is called “Card Clash,” and is a know issue.

It’s p****d me off, as I thought everything Apple was synched up?

Thought I’d share, so that no one else makes the same mistake.

Get your frustrations but I suspect it also affects Google Pay etc too.

Looking at my NatWest Debit MasterCard on iPhone and Apple Watch they have different ‘device numbers’ (probably as a security measure to avoid skimming) which is likely why tapping in and out for journeys needs to be the same method used as their systems can’t tell it’s the same bank card?

I was going to appeal it, but I don’t have an account so I’ll just put it down to experience.

It's not card clash. You have to tap in and out with the same device all day because the machine sees them as being different. Apple doesn't hand over your bank card number, so the machine can't link them together. You wont get the benefit of the daily cap if you use two devices either.

Ps. How did you get on with using your watch on the tube? I've tried it a couple of times but the gate fails to recognise it a good 25% of the time, and I have to stand there trying and re-trying it (it always works eventually). I never have that problem with my phone.

It works every time for me.

Make sure there isn’t any clothing between your watch and the reader.

I always use my Watch on the Tube, on the odd occasion it doesn't work I move to another gate and I'm through. Have never used my iPhone at all.
