Has anyone tried the new Carplay implementation on cars with no touch screens? I've got an Audi with CarPlay, and all the interaction is done with the scroll wheel in the car.

I just wanted to see if anyone had tried CarPlay 13 on one of these, and if it still works OK?

Cheers,
Stewart

While the screen in my Mazda is a touchscreen, I never touch it - I use the knob controller instead. And it works fine, just as well as under iOS12. The updates are great.

Currently using iOS13 CarPlay in my BMW which hasn’t got a touchscreen. Using the iDrive scroll wheel works great and loving the new interface.

I’ve got an 2019 RS3 without touch. CarPlay works great on iOS 13. I use it every day and the changes in usability are quite significant compared to iOS 12 CarPlay.

This is just related to CarPlay in general, but I don’t find the update that great after using it for a few weeks.

The multi-apps are just too small to be useful. It needs to be 50/50 split screen IMO. Having maps in a window, directions in a smaller window, and music in just as small of a window makes them all useless. 50/50 split screen with maps and music side by side would make more sense. The ability to add songs to my playlist right from the 50/50 split. The way it is now, I feel like using full screen apps is still much better.

I'm still on IOS 12 jailbroken - non touch screen Acura TLX.

I'm most excited about IOS13 ability to use other apps i.e. phone or messages on the phone itself while navigation (I use Google Maps, Apple Maps, and Waze) without losing the navigation on the CarPlay screen.

Does anyone have any experience with this so far?

That’s probably the best feature. No apps running on the phone effect the CarPlay interface.

I'm glad to hear it works well, Audi driver here too. Just a shame their newest crop of cars get rid of the swivel wheel! It's the best thing about MMI!

2019 AMG C 43 - and it works pretty well with the dial controls, also does not have touch screen. I actually love the new home screen with maps + Music up at the same time. There is also a pane with the next instruction/lane you need to be in which is a nice touch.

Hey friend, have you tried CarPlay in your Mazda after beta 2 came out? I didn't install until beta 2 and it crashes on mine. Mazda Connect version 70.00.100 NA.

On my Mazda 6 I get that Carplay stopped responding. Is that what you mean by it crashing?

Working in Acura RDX 2019. Non Touch with Trackpad..

Only issue I encountered so far is with YouTube Music.. The playlist will not play until you open YouTube Music app in the phone..

I’m getting a lot of black screens on my Mazda as well, requiring a hard reboot of the phone. Might actually downgrade to beta 1.

Did anyone experiencing this problem install it to a clean phone? I did an OTA update over beta 1.

Yup, I was having that exact problem today. It seems to be some interference with Bluetooth. (If I could get CarPlay to activate before Bluetooth connected - not easy - it would work.) I temporarily deleted the car’s Bluetooth on my phone, and now CarPlay is working fine.

Yeah, lots of black screens and messages that “CarPlay is not responding.”

I noticed some wonky Bluetooth behavior, and tried disabling it (deleting my car’s Bluetooth from the phone) and now it works perfectly.

Hopefully that’s a temporary fix. I reported the problem and fix to Apple.

Thanks. I'll give that a try before restoring.

Beta 2 works fine with my 2018 Mazda CX-5 (but I have bluetooth disconncted).
I really love the new carplay but I'm not sure about the behaviour:
On this "dashboard" somtimes it shows my next calendar event, sometimes it does not.
What bothers me most is the behavioiur of this dashboard. It seems, that everytime i start my car it's different.
I would really love the map to just show where I am and follow my car without having an active navigation. But that only happened once. Most of the time there is just a static picture of the map from the time I started the engine. But then it does not move. Only when I start a navigation or when I open the map fullscreen.

I am sometimes having a similar issue with Podcast on Beta 2. I pretty much have to kill the app and relaunch it from my phone.

They did some nice aesthetic tweaks between beta 1 and 2, specially color schemes on maps.

I’ve narrowed it down to Apple Maps as the cause of my crashing. Bluetooth has always been on, but if AM is in widget, full or open on my phone at all, it’s crashville on CarPlay.

That's interesting. I haven't had this problem. It follows my car, on the dashboard, even if I don't have an active destination. On b1 I did see a few times where the location did not update. I haven't had time yet to extensively test b2, but it did work well this morning.

I already mentioned this in another thread here in macrumors.
I found out why that happened.
Maps had "home" and "work" as my favorite addresses. So when I drove to work in the morning, it suggested the work address and I saw the overview of the route. I then cancelled the suggestion since I know the way to my work and so the map was stuck.
But once i deleted the addresses from the favorites it works fine
