Just wanted to run this by you all in case I missed something. Right now I have my centre screen on my civic and I have my phone mounted right beside my steering wheel. When I use Waze that puts the screen exactly where I need it. Using a map on the centre console is really quite far for my eyes to be looking if I need to glance at some information. What is even worse is that the iPhone screen shows the upcoming instructions on the phone screen. While this may seem good, because its next to my steering wheel, its what I glance at. This is a problem because the top item only shows the last set of directions. It doesn't update. So if a street is 10 km away, it will always say 10km away instead of changing as we get closer, making it literally useless.

----

Two things I Think would be amazing:

1. CarPlay has a simple features where you can "lock" any CarPlay app to your phone screen. So this would mean that if I locked my map to that screen, then no matter what I clicked on the other screen, it wouldn't change on the phone. This would be very convenient for having things like podcast info on the other screen, or just listening to the radio and having the radio information on that screen.

2. In certain situations like "maps" it would be great to have the option to swap which screen is the parent screen. So with maps it could push the upcoming directions to the main console and leave the maps on the phone showing.

---

Anyways, just some thoughts. Because its not integrated like above I may have to stop using care play altogether because if I have waze open and I click on anything on my console in the car, Waze will close. So its kinda annoying - The other option is to use maps, but then maps won't actually show on my phone and instead shows on the centre console to far from my eyes. I don't think Apple has quite figured out this CarPlay thing. Its not bad but its just easier to use my phone without integrating it on the main console screen.

Carplay is fairly useless, and I find those who comment otherwise to have weak arguments. The biggest gripe is:

1- Not being able to use 3rd party apps such as google maps (Apple maps is just horrible and apple not letting users use other choices is not only a disservice but dangerous. I've had cases where maps have steered me the wrong way and I've been late to CANCER-related medical visits. Spouse has ended up in the wrong parts of town as well)

2- What you mentioned in #1. Apple think's it's your parent and won't let you "un-mirror" the phone. So in the case where you have maps (god forbid) on your carplay screen, and your co-pilot decides to say, check your messages, it removes maps from your screen, then limits what you can see in messages, then starts to autoplay messages for you.

They do everything for a reason and these reasons are set in stone for now. How companies like BMW CHARGE their users $500 to have this feature is beyond me.

You’re not meant to be using your phone when using CarPlay - the whole point is to move the interface to your in car screen.

Long term the aim is for wireless CarPlay so it can remain in our pockets or bags.

you're not supposed to be using your phone while driving, but your co-pilot should be allowed to use your phone without punishing the screen in your car and taking away whatever it is you are using it for.

BMW guy here - it's more outrageous than that. BMW couples the CarPlay option with the nav system/premium package - you pay at least $1950 + $300 for the privilege to bypass the nav system you paid for in order to use the maps app on your iPhone. Makes no sense. The only way CarPlay is a desirable feature is if one owns a car with an inferior in built nav system and wants to bypass it...

Isnt this down to Google to add the Carplay functionality to their app? Other apps can show as Carplay option such as TuneIn Radio among others. Are Google for some reason not adding the functionality to their application?
