I am having an issue with the wife's iPhone 16 Pro, Carplay, and Apple Maps.

iPhone 16 pro
iOS Version 18.5

When using Apple Maps and Carplay via her phone, after say, 7-10 minutes the map will start wondering, the directions will be there, but the visual is off. She has to open her phone back up and it will then re-orientate and bring the vehicle back into view on the map with current road, direction etc.

I have the exact same phone and settings and it doesn't do it when my phone is connected. I have checked all of the settings on my phone against hers and they are same... I don't know if I am missing something on her phone. But this gets frustrating. Oh and this also happens if we using Plexamp and streaming music.

Looked at the following:

Settings:
Background App Refresh - Green showing (On)

Settings:
Apps - Maps
Location - While Using the App or Widgets (Checked)
Precise Location - Green showing (On)
Notifications - Immediate
Background App Refresh - Green showing (On)
Preferred type of travel - Driving

Location Services:
Maps - While using

I have googled and searched some other locations, but I can't find what would cause this... any suggestions?

I’ll start with the obligatory… Have you tried rebooting the iPhone, vehicle’s infotainment system, and/or unpair and repair the phone to CarPlay yet?

Yes to all of the above, with the exception of the vehicles infotainement system, other than when I turn the car off and on, I don't know how to reboot it per say. Again, it works fine with my phone, but not hers. Oh and it worked fine when we both had iPhone 12 Pro's. We noticed it about three or four months ago and have been troubleshooting it ever since.

Is this a wired or wireless CarPlay connection? Is there any weird behavior with her phone when navigating with just the phone? (Not connected to CarPlay)

Good question, I should have included this... it happens on both wired and wireless. I have an aftermarket wireless carplay adaptor that both phones connect to. We have also tried the wired route since we noticed this and it happens in both instances.

Everything is pointing to her phone being the culprit with syncing issues. Any other problems? If not too much of a PITA, I would factory reset and do a fresh install of iOS. You’ve been at this for months, might as well bite the bullet. Or at the very least, sign out and back into iCloud first.

Yeah... I know... I was hoping not to have to do it. But you are right... lol... dang it, hahah.

Thank you for trying. 👍

Try google maps and see if it has the same problem which might indicate an issue with the phone’s GPS receiver.

Perhaps just press and hold whatever button is used to turn the system on? That works on my VW and suspect it might work on other cars. In my case, I have to hold it for quite awhile... maybe 30 seconds? Then it will re-boot. The whole system is so buggy in my car, I need to do a re-boot fairly often just to get the radio working!

Easy enough... just googled it and found it... yup press and hold a few buttons to reboot it! Going to try that when I get home!

Yep, that’s how it works in BMW as well. It’s like a 90 second press and hold

Ok... did the one for my Mazda CX. Didn't work. Still had the issue. Next try, before I fully reset the phone is going to be a google maps try. Will post back once we do that.

By the way, after the reboot, the system does seem a lot more responsive. Cleaned out the cob webs lol.
