Posting this here because the MR admins won't create a CarPlay forum.

I am using a Pioneer AVH-4200NEX with an iPhone 6S+. I prefer the 3D navigation where it gives you a "point of view" orientation to the map. If I use CarPlay to put in a destination, it comes up in 3D navigation mode. I just did a trip where that worked fine. When I got back in the truck after my appointment, it prompted me on the CarPlay screen with an option to go back Home. Awesome... that is the kind of thing that really saves time. I clicked on it and it started my trip back home. But this time it came up in 2D navigation without the map oriented correctly, and it was zoomed out for the whole trip. I was able to zoom in so that I could see street names and such, but I could not figure out how to get it in the 3D "point of view" mode. Eventually I canceled the trip and asked Siri via CarPlay for directions to home, and it popped up with the same trip but in the right mode. Any idea how I could have switched modes in CarPlay from 2D to 3D and/or how to get it to default on a return trip to 3D?

Thanks.

That's an iOS feature, not CarPlay.. You need to set your home address in your Contact card. If you have, you should be able to ask siri to take you home. iOS will then notify you from time to time.. It's a handy feature.

I installed a AVH-4100NEX in my 2003 Dodge Ram, I love it. What firmware are you on? Did you update it since you got it? I have had several different quirks, mainly due to the delay in the unit starting to play music when in Bluetooth music mode.

The 4200 doesn't have any newer firmware than what came on it... I think 1.01 if I remember correctly. Appears the firmware is different form the 4100.

I'm not sure if this is a bug or just an operator problem... is there way to set a default for this behavior somewhere?

I don't think so, mine seems to remember the last time I used it.

I just found this site:
http://avic411.com/

That's the thing... I've never used maps anyway other than the 3D way. Its never done that on CarPlay before, and when I immediately asked Siri for the same trip, it came up correctly. Strange.

That site... good find. And MR admins don't think this is a topic anyone is interested in. They will miss the window to get the CarPlay discussion traffic.

I agree... We need it here.

Have you tried forced quitting all open apps, and restarting your phone? Then starting to use carplay maps again?

I haven't, but that said I had to reset the iPhone as new last week to get it to work with CarPlay at all, due to an inadvertent setting of parental permissions that was blocking CarPlay, and I had no passcode to reset it. I haven't used enough since the rebuild to create any problems I don't think. I will try that if it does it again, but keep in mind its kind of time consuming to test because I have to go somewhere with maps, and then have it prompt me to go back home.

I may have never tried your exact situation. I rarely go somewhere without disconnecting and spending some time before returning home.

I guess I could try later, just put in a local grocery store, then turn around and come back.

I'm a one-week vet on CarPlay, but may have an answer for you. There are 2 modes for displaying a trip: Overview and Detail. Detail is the POV mode and Overview shows the entire route (plus an overlay of traffic conditions). On my Chevy Suburban (which has CarPlay built into the OEM headunit), you toggle between the 2 modes by tapping on the screen and then selecting the mode from the top of the screen.

I didn't just turn around... I actually had a meeting with an attorney, and when I came back out and started the car the Maps app prompted me asking if I wanted to go Home.

OK, that may be the trick... I'll try that next time in the car. Thanks. You have about 2 days more veteran status than I do!

I believe Carplay will always ask if you want to go home after visiting an attorney!

You solved the mystery! I was under the impression that the Overview would just give the list of turns in text. But you are 100% correct and today I was able to toggle it back to 3D with a tap of the screen. I think possibly if I had left it alone before rather than zooming in, it might have automatically switched from Overview when I started driving, but since I zoomed in it kept it in that mode.

Actually, it should ask if you want to go to the bank after visiting an attorney! These people go through money faster than a squirrel through nuts in the fall. But seriously, I think that if you are not home, and go into Maps, CarPlay asks if you want to go home. Pretty cool feature. It would be nice if it at some point operated more like Google Now and looked at your appointments to see where you might be going. Would be cool if I had a flight and got in the car and it asked if I wanted to go to the airport I was flying out of. Having testing it, but assuming that isn't there yet.

Glad to hear this fixed your issue!

I think it has suggested some other locales to me but I'll watch it more carefully from now on.

Verified today that if it brings up the suggested trip home, it goes to Overview, and will stay in that mode unless you change it. Simple to change now that I know what to do. Just hit Detail after it starts.
