Carrying Case Recommendations?

Hey Guys,

My MBP will arrive from Amazon on Thursday and I'm scoping out some cases to carry it in between my home and workplace. I'm looking for:

-- Slot loading
-- Shoulder strap
-- Some extras pockets for other devices (cell phones, chargers, etc)

What are some of the popular ones? I looked at the InCase today at the Apple store and it was pretty nice. I was impressed with how soft the interior of it was but it might be a little small for everything that I plan to carry in it. I don't want to spend an extravagant amount of money so no Tumi cases :).

If you ordered the 15" you have many options. I have the 17" and not too many companies make cases for monsters like this. I went to several computer stores (CompUSA, Fry's and Micro Center) before stopping at Apple itself.

Go figure. They had the only case I really liked...

All the big boys have been mentioned so far, and I will add one more in Timbuk2. I have the Commute XL, and like it a lot. I do like TomBihn's bags as well though. They look pretty cool. Overall, I personally would never go with anything other than a messenger style, since it doesn't scream "LAPTOP IN HERE" when carrying my baby around with me.

Well, my MBP was $3K so it never leaves my side. Besides, I look like a nerd. What would I be carrying if it wasn't a computer? Legal papers or engineering drawings? :rolleyes:

I clearly said "personally", and I'm sure I'm not in the minority on that point anyway. Carrying around a bag obviously designed to house a laptop, let alone a brand new $3K mbp, would be more susceptible to thieves, as opposed to a bag which looks like it's simply holding a couple of school books, or maybe even some engineering drawings. ;)
 
I purchased a laptop messenger bag from Crumpler.

I bought the "Considerable Embarassment". It doesn't look like a laptop briefcase at all, more like just a book bag, but it has the "slip-slot" padded compartment designed just for my MBP. It also doesn't touch bottom--for added protection. Plenty of room in other compartments for books/notebooks/etc. and small pockets for accessories, charger, cell, etc. Also, cool colors are available with constrasting interiors!:)

Will set you back $85.

Well, if the bag had an Apple logo I can see how it would scream out "expensive computer inside!" but this one is kind of discrete. I guess I don't live in fear of getting robbed at gunpoint so I don't worry about it.

You could always get the bag embroidered with a Packard-Bell logo... no one would steal one of those machines when they were new!

Semantics are fun. This is gold, as it implies I'm melodramatic, yet the statement itself is over the top. Who is afraid of being robbed at gunpoint per se? There are numerous methods of having such a pricey piece of equipment stolen. It's beyond simple to deduce that a certain type of bag might give away certain contents stored within, thus possibly attracting those who might possibly be looking to steal said item, so masking what may or may not be in any bag could help divert probable thieves looking for said item. The bag you linked is very good for the same purpose, and I was not putting it down in any way (at least I did not mean to come off that way). More importantly, I type this not as someone living in fear of having my mbp stolen at all times. I'm simply relaying a school of thought on the simple concept of misdirection for the purpose of protecting one's valuables. My point is more of an minuscule "added bonus" of messenger bags, if you will. It's pretty logical and quite simple. That Occam was a sly cat.

In the end, I think we pretty much agree on the topic at hand. I guess my sarcasm meter is running on empty today. I need to fuel it with more coffee.

Now back to the topic at hand...take a look at Chrome Bags as well. People give them some high marks also.

A gun to steal a laptop would seem pretty drastic. I would go with a simple *snip* of the strap and run personally.. :p
 
I have a very nice sleeve from Waterfield which I love. Customizable. Strap, no strap, flip top, you name it. They also have some nice bags.

Their stuff is not cheap, but most of it is actually made in the U.S. and not farmed out to some 14 year old in Malaysia earning 15 cents per hour.
