well you'd need some sort of audio capture device... in general probably using a device made for hardware... some examples are el gato's eye tv, or formac's studio, etc. what type of system do you have? if you have a powermac, you could theoretically get a new eyetv pci card that allows you to capture video/audio... that is under $100 i think, the other hardware devices are more like $200+
i'm guessing that if you just have a tape or two you want to do this with, that type of investment isn't worth it. try to find someone who has the capabilities and could do it for you. if not, you may have to buy the hardware or pay a company to do it (which might be cheaper if you just have one tape). heck, you could probably find someone here on macrumors who would do it for a couple. (myself included) hah

Plug your tape deck into the line in on your Mac. Set the levels and use a program like Sound Studio or Spark LE to capture/digitize it. Then save it as your preferred file format.

I prefer the +$200 idea myself. Especially if you REALLY like the cassette.
Just kidding jelloshot. Your doing it the hardcore professional way, while the rest of us would probably just go the "line in" "free software" way. Its not your solution, but the disparity in the solutions offered that made me chuckle.
When I bought Toast, it came with some sort of software and cable to do this exact thing. Do you have toast? And did it come with these extra bits?

i could've sworn that line in was only on some macs, and even that it had been lost recently (as opposed to my old old beige g3 which i'm pretty sure had video capture built in too....)

Or if you have an iBook which doesn't come with the line-in, you could buy an USB audio capture device like Griffin's iMic and hook one end into your cassette player and the other USB end into your iBook and away you go.. I recommend Audacity too for recording. Have fun!

Ok pardon my stupidity. I have a ton of adapters, cables around the house. Is there an easy way to ID this adapter, or is it something special I would have to get, which isn't a problem. And where is the line in on a Titanium Powerbook??

Hooked up the line from a cassette deck to the audio imput on my G4 tower, but how do I get it to imput intor Garage Band?
I can see the input levels in the sound control panels of the O.S., but I don't know how to input it into Garage Band!
