Cat 5 wall jacks

I'm running some cat 5 wall jacks and have a question. Do i use the same pattern on side A as i do on side B? Or do the wires change position? Right now i just have one cable ran from the living room into my office. There is a Cat 5 jack on either end. If i plug a patch, or crossover cable in on the living room, and then another in the office, will it work?

You don't need crossover cable. Modern computers automatically take care of that if the jack crossover the wires but I don't think it does.

Jacks are wired straight through normally. If for some reason your computers don't link with a normal patch cable, change one of them out for a crossover. Don't change both though, or you end up with a straight through connection again.

Wire them the same way. The A and B indications are just two different standards for matching colors. Pick one of the standards and stick with it throughout the house.

I saw that on the back of the jack. But i used the pattern it showed on the paper that was inclosed with the jacks. I was saying side A as in the living room, and side B as the office.

ALL jacks and building wire are wired "straight". The only time you should consider a cross over cable is the odd special case of connecting two computers without using a hub or switch.

Yes two crossover cable back to back will work only because to net effect is to not cros over. That said most modern equipment will auto detect a a swapped cable and correct the miss-wired mistake.

If you are pulling wire, always pull twice as much as you think you need, Even if the extra wire remains unterminated. Cat-5 works well for audio and other uses and it's cheap.

Technically T568A is supposed to be used to terminate a horizontal cable run and T568B is supposed to be used as patch cables but it really doesn't make a difference. Just stick to one and you'll be fine. Most factory made cable uses the T568B standard so I'd say use that one. It's what I use and just about every other tech I talk to uses.

I wouldn't wire a network incorrectly and assume that only a modern, auto-configuring, lan adapter is going to be used. That's just poor workmanship. Take the time before you crimp the connector and check your wiring (or just make sure you always stick with one standard).

Choose A or B for the entire house or office don't mix it or you'll need crossover cables!

If you make one side A and the other side B, you created a crossover run and you'll need one crossover cable (assuming it's only one device -- doesn't matter on which side) for the equipment on both sides of the run to see each other.

If you went A or B for the entire house, then you'll only need a straight through cable when connecting equipment to the network.

What i meant was side A is the living-room and side B is the office. I know there is A and B on the jack but thats not what i meant. I ran A to A, thats why i was wondering if it would work.

Yes, you want to wire both sides the same for your in-wall wiring. I would pick one standard though. I prefer the 568B standard, but 568A is seen more in residential applications. If you think you'll use these jacks for voice, then the question is a bit more complicated - otherwise I'd go with 568B.
