Can someone explain how, although apparently disabled, my Wi-fi seems to be functioning? I say this, as I am still able to use my HP laptop in another room, without any internet connection. In the same location I am running a Virgin Tivo box with with an unused ethernet socket available, but don't know what the mechanics of this are as I have never investigated it. Thanks in advance.

I don't think your question is clear. From the picture, you've got wifi disabled on your MacBook but it's connected to the internet via wired ethernet. That's why your MacBook has internet.

You also say your HP laptop does not have an internet connection but still connects to the internet–clearly it does have a connection, but the picture you posted doesn't have any relevance to that question.

Tivo–I don't know why you mentioned your Tivo.

Thanks, Chabig. It's the Wi-fi on my Apple Mac desktop that is disabled. I mentioned the Tivo as it is also wi-fi equipped, but I don't know whether it's possible for my laptop to be connecting there as it has no physical connection whatever. We only watch TV on it. They are both(Tivo and laptop) housed in the same room downstairs. It's probably an age thing (I'm 87 next week) and although I spent most of my working life in the electronics industry, computers came a bit late for me and I have difficulty in coping with some of the new technology. Very frustrating. I've just had a thought. I'll switch off the iMac and hub and see what results I obtain then. Back to you later.

Ok. All sorted. The problem was mainly pilot error, ie. lack of knowledge. Now that I have made a more detailed study of the matter, I realise what was happening. Nothing to do with the Tivo, as you so succinctly pointed out in your reply. Switching off the wi-fi signal referred to disabling it at the receiving end, if you can make sense of that. Thanks for the input.

Yes. I think I understand. Your desktop is wired. Your MacBook and TiVo are wireless. Everything is working now and I’m glad you got it sorted out. ?
