Catalina Authentication issues....

I am having a couple of issues that maybe someone can shed some light on:

1) iMessages
When attempting to sign onto iMessages I get a message after entering my Apple ID and PW that "an error occurred during authentication" and "Could not sign into iMessages..an error occurred during activation"

2) Watch unlock
When I click of allowing my watch to unlock I get the message "Your Mac must be signed into iCloud..you can sign in using iCloud preferences"

somehow I think they are related. I AM signed into iCloud - all my iCloud stuff works, calendars, photos, drive, etc. -- I even tried to sign out and back in (a hassle) but same result


Any clues?
