Hello. I’m going to do my first manual back on my new iMac today. I know it all goes through Finder now. When I plug my iPhone 6s in to do a manual back up, should I.....

1.) click “back up all of the data on this iphone to this Mac” and not iCloud? I have some of my iPhone backing up to iCloud inside my 6s.

2.) Should I click the “encrypt” bubble? If I understand this correctly, the encrypt option just saves passwords and sign in info, so if I was to restore a new iPhone from the back up, all my passwords would be added to the new iPhone I’m restoring too?

Thank you for any help.

1)yes
2) yes. Just set some simple password that you won't forget, like 12345
Hello again. Can I ask you another question? I just really want to get this right lol. I have two pics below of the back up window, one is my old Mac mini that I’m moving over from and the new iMac.

On my new iMac, I had asked about clicking the “back up to this Mac” and unclickling the “back up to iCloud”. You told me yes to those. But I happened to look at the Mac minis back up window and the only one that’s ever been clicked is the ICloud option. I guess I never backed up to the actual Mac mini? I’m also noticing that my Mac mini doesn’t have any “sync” boxes checked, but my new iMac does. So my questions are...

1.) On my new iMac, Do I still click “back up to this Mac” and un click “back up to iCloud”? I do have stuff backing up to iCloud on my iPhone, I’m not sure if that matter?

2.) On the new iMac, what will happen with the “automatically sync when iPhone is connected” box clicked? And what will happen if I un click that box, since there were never any sync boxes check on my Mac mini for the last 10 years.

Thanks again.

1) Seems you already have backup encryption password enabled. And select "This computer" from the list. p.s. Under backing up to iCloud, do you mean iCloud backup itself or just data sync (switches under Settings > AppleID > iCloud?
2) It will automatically sync photos/music/etc if sync for this data is enabled. Better turn it off.

Great thanks so much. I will definitely un check the “sync” box that’s already checked. I haven’t done the back up yet, I just wanted to touch base again. I will also check the “back up to this Mac”

As far as the “back up most important info to iCloud” that is already checked on my new iMac, Im not sure if that’s supposed to be checked along with the “back up to this Mac”? I already do an iCloud back up in my 6s, so I wasn’t sure if it was still necessary to do the “back up most important..to iCloud”

sorry and thanks for the help.
