Catalina issues with appications and trash

I can tell many are having troubles since updating to Catalina. In hopes some have been resoled.

So today it started to not let me open applications. I have tried opening Pages but it don't open and says it's not responding, I have forced it to quit and the same thing happened the next time. If it does open and i try and to anything after the first attempt (say open a file) it then goes back to not responding.

Even when things other things were working when I drag a file (even small items) to the trash it doesn't just move to the trash can. I get a bar waiting for the function to drag, though it's to the end of the bar. (nothing in the can)

It's possible there might be some kind of HD failure, particularly the failure to open applications and delete a file ("movement" on the SSD/HD). Did you try restarting and going to Recovery Mode to run Disk Utility? That might be a good place to start.

I did thank you but that was before the more recent issues. I will give it another try tomorrow. Thanks

I tried it again today, it didn't come up with any errors or problems. It's also random. For example firebox and other programs come up and work fine. But Pages and Photoshop will open but I have a problem opening a file. Actually Pages is having trouble opening sometimes.

Same with the trash, sometimes it goes in fast and no delay and other times you have to wait a long time or stop it.

Hmm, if Disk Utility gave a clean report, it could possibly be some kind of corruption with the OS. I'd try a reinstall (in-place, no data lost) of macOS and go from there.
