It seems like whenever I am trying to update an app within the app itself, a pop-up error always shows

failed to perform authorized file move for XXX.app.

I have experienced this on Alfred, Bartender, Cyberduck. I think the problem is related to the security protocol introduced in Catalina, which kinda prevented the installer to move the new version of the program to the Application folder. Has anyone experienced the same issue?

Make sure your security settings are "App store and identified developers". If that doesn't work, you can activate the hidden "anyone/anywhere" option in the terminal:

sudo spctl --master-disable

That isn't fixing everything (and it should really be used only temporarily) but it does fix many issues in apps not yet ready for Catalina.

Thank you, I'll try out this solution in the next update.

Update: the issue persisted with the solution applied. I think I'm gonna report the bug to Apple.
