So, I upgraded to Catalina, and things have been generally stable and working the way they should on my 2018 13" MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, with the exception of Time Machine. After the upgrade, time machine would not back up. It would hang midway through the backup process and not make progress even after leaving it to run all night.

I assumed the external backup drive was on the fritz, so I tried a new drive, and I get the same behavior. The backup starts and runs at an acceptable speed, and then the backup just stop and goes to a non-existent crawl. This morning, I reinstalled Catalina, but Time Machine is still not backup up for me.

Any ideas how to get past this?

A few weeks ago I was having issues with TM where it would not go pass preparing backup... for 2 days it would say that every time I tried doing a backup. But I fixed it by deleting the backup that was made on the day it started giving me the problem.

I had an issue a while ago - before Catalina - which was similar. I tried another backup software and it indicated a bad file - I deleted the file it indicated and the TM worked fine again. Think it was Carbon Copy . TM just hung and didn't indicate what file it was hanging on.

it was if App Cleaner was installed maybe? It happened to a lot of people when upgrading to Mojave
