I just got an MBP 2020 that has Catalina installed. Before this I was running Big Sur which I run for 1 week but I just returned that computer to Apple so...

I guess what I am saying is that I would like to install Big Sur on this one and actually never did a lot of FRESH installs in my MBPs, for the most part I always updated them...then I realized that I might have been doing it wrong all this time...

So with this computer being literally new and CATALINA being fresh, my question is:

Would I gain anything from a Big Sur fresh install or should I just upgrade from the App Store in Catalina?

Do the upgrade - it's easier and will save you time. As your new computer isn't full of years of junk and remnants of long-uninstalled apps, you'll gain nothing by doing a fresh install.

If it was my machine, I would do the upgrade to get 11.1 and then boot to recovery and do a clean install. Buts that's me.
just curious: why? i mean, why not just upgrade, and then, if there's an issue that you think a clean install would fix, do that then?

i used to do clean installs on principle. then i stopped, and all was well... and has been, for years...

Just principle like you said. I still thinks it worth it.

Just upgrade, no need fresh install, because your Catalina version is still new fresh install (not much junk or setting over the time which may cause issues when upgrade). If you already used the machine using Catalina for about a year, then it may make sense to do fresh install.

I'd say it still wouldn't make sense to do a fresh install even after a year unless there was a problem.

My MBP, which I bought in 2013, was upgraded to Big Sur when the first beta came out. In fact, I've never done a clean install since I bought it. I think it came with Mavericks.
