MP 7,1 Catalina Update Problem on New Mac Pro

Just updated my new 2019 Mac Pro to macOS Catalina 10.15.4.

One of the USB-C ports on the top panel of the computer stopped working. I have verified that it was not the external hard drive. Plugged that one in to another port on back of the machine and it's fine.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Check the case fitment, more than one user here reported front USB-C problems that were caused by bad contacts or bad case fitment.

Same problem here. It is not the case fitment. Did not touch the case since before the update when it worked. Now it doesn't.

In the Facebook Group "Mac Pro 7,1 Users" several people are reporting the same issue.

Called Apple and they have no clue. Please let them know if you are affected by this.

Same problem -easy fix. Turn off the computer. Unplug the power cord for 15 seconds. Plug it back in and reboot. Problem fixed.

I had the issue too. The port nearest the edge died. The other top port worked OK. I seldom use the top ports, so I didn't notice the issue, however I know they were working under 10.15.3. Followed the advice of bob_stan and now all is good.

First post, and it's because I just bought a Mac Pro 7,1. Turned it on, first thing I did was update to 10.15.4. Next thing I did after the install/restart was plug in my SSD top right USB-C port and Hmmm, nothing? So far I'm a little stressed since I just shelled out $8k...

I did not experience this issue with the 10.15.4 update. The 7.1 powered down and rebooted as part of the update with no issues and all ports worked initially upon reboot. Just reporting my experience.

Update: To be accurate ~ there were no devices in either of the top ports when the 7.1 was updated.

Same here, I had my iPad Pro plugged in that slot charging and I did the update mid charge. When the Mac rebooted from the long update process the iPad was no longer charging and wasn’t being read. I unplugged the port and plugged it back in and it wasn’t working. The other port did, so I reset pram and then unplugged the Mac and it worked. Strange issue.

Uh, oh. Just tried my top USB-C ports. The rightmost one (closer to the edge) is dead.

I just updated to 10.15.4 and it went through all its reboots etc. Then I saw this thread and tried the ports - one works - the other does not.

At the moment I'm backing up over 8TB onto a slow external device, so it will probably be tomorrow before I can try the unplug/plug method.

Come to think of it, I had it shut down - after the update - to install a 12TB drive in the Pegasus J2i, so it in essence got the off/on treatment already and the port is still dead.

I'll try it again anyway after the backup completes.

Mac needs to be unplugged to do the SMC reset. Turning it off without unplugging it won’t do anything.

You have to unplug to remove the case…

I did the power down/restart this morning and it worked. Both ports are now active.

It still puzzles me that I did the equivalent (disconnect/reconnect power) previously and it didn't cure that problem. Maybe the second time's the charm?

Anyway, it is working now, so it's all good.

Same here, I restarted and the port then worked, to then stop again the nextday. Respectfully telling people to open the case and a check connection is absurd. These have all happened after the software update, not opening of the case. The fact we’ve all had this happen means it’s a bug. Obvs.

I would install the developer beta on a separate drive or partition and then submit a bug report using Feedback Assistant.

I had the issue and was fixed by reseating the cover and has been fine since.
This was with 10.15.3 - just make sure you seat the cover properly.

I had the same problem. I unplugged my machine from power last night, booted up this morning, and the port was alive again.
I think it has nothing to do with reseating the cover. To remove the cover, you have to remove the plug from the machine. The fact that you remove the plug, is what is fixing the problem.

Is this what the base graphics card config should look like? I have tried everything those top ports only provide power, but not work for data. It's annoying.
