A year after initial release and after so many updates... Simply unacceptable...

Installing the latest HP drivers (July 2020) downloaded from the official HP site on Catalina 10.15.7 gives the error "HP Framework malware.." "contact Apple"...

Everything HP related has permission on the Security tab...

All my clients complaining about constantly having to manually allow permission to apps downloaded from their official sites...

I guess that Big Sure will be the same.

I hope so, but I have a 426 mfp printer I use wirelessly. My Canon 8800 flatbed scanner I did have to resort to a 3rd party software (VuewScan) which is fine. But there I keep a 10.6.8 mini for "rosetta" requiring software.

Maybe they (hp) and others are leaving the integration space to 3rd parties on the platform?

why do you complain about Catalina, when drivers are developed by HP? Why don't you admit that developers of HP are simply lazy? Let me help you: I had to wait almost a year for Xerox developers to make a working driver for my 3 years old printer because Xerox simply just don't cares to release drivers on time! Some people I know have to sell their perfectly working printers and scanners becauses manufacturers just don't care to release a driver at all when the device is more than 6 years old.

The reality is that theres nothing in it for manufacturers to allocate resources creating new drivers for a new OS. Better to force consumers to have to buy a new one. Same reason I try my hardest not to buy a 'smart TV'. After 2 years you'll never see another firmware update, shortly after all the apps stop working and lo and behold I have to buy a new one because the missus cant watch her korean dramas on Netflix.

I guess I have been fortunate with Catalina, Everything work well and I'm still using a 4 year old HP printer that synced in Catalina almost instantly along with a 8 year old (USB Bose sound system ) and 2 home pods also.Never really had much trouble with Catalina once I set the security setting and system preference to fit my needs. Crossing my fingers things get better for all those that having trouble.

THIS times a million. You do not have control (or in reality ownership...) of any device you possess in 2020 that talks to the internet. You are lucky if you even have 1000 days of a honeymoon before the gimping starts.

I find it interesting that Catalina regularly complains about system extensions that won't work in the next release of the operating system when my mid-2012 MacBook Pro won't work with the next release of the operating system.

hp told apple to revoke their certificate. apple complied. there’s a fixed driver available from apple.

this is not apples fault. hp screwed up.

see here

and before raging at apple after reading the first bit

The Register understands from sources familiar with the matter that HP Inc asked Apple to revoke its printer driver code-signing certificates. It appears this request backfired as it left users unable to print. A HP Inc spokesperson told us on Friday night:

We unintentionally revoked credentials on some older versions of Mac drivers. This caused a temporary disruption for those customers and we are working with Apple to restore the drivers. In the meantime, we recommend users experiencing this problem to uninstall the HP driver and use the native AirPrint driver to print to their printer.

apple has a fixed driver available on their website. i downloaded it on thursday or friday. can’t remember where exactly but google should find it for you as easily as it found it for me.

Lion was the worst for me.

And not because I am still a fan of Snow Leopard.

The Cat has been just fine across many, many devices.

Would not say "worse ever", but it has its challenges.

Clearly the focus is on Big Sur. Catalina is a "hit or miss" depending on your mac's model and what you use it for.

So you're saying don't take a chance with Catalina. As I did. Sticking with Mojave and have not a single complain to make.

I am super happy with Catalina at this point. Will not be going to Big Sur until 11.0.3. I recently changed to an external Thunderbolt 3 2Gig boot drive, a fresh install of 10.15.7 and now the supplemental update, and this machine is rock solid.

Now is a different day....the supplemental update came out and it seems to help Catalina move out of the "Vista" category. But for Mac Pro 2013, it still does not access all of the CPU and GPU and seems to throttle down still to minimize the heat coming out from the top - is ok now in the winter months.. :)

If you are not rendering or can wait, then Catalina is ok from my opinion. If you just do YouTube, Office, Facebook, Internet etc. Catalina is good.

I'm still running El Capitan, I only upgraded from ML to get Maps, I can't see a single reason to run a later OS.

Shame really I've been a happy Apple user since my Powerbook G4, I keep watching Macrumors in the hope they'll release something interesting, but I haven't seen anything in a long time.

Understandable...but a main reason probably many upgrade is due to the programs they use and/or having too more so because of a slick OS...

If you are good with the software you have on Mountain Lion, it is understandable why not to upgrade. There are still good browsers around to use if needing the internet also that work with Mountain Lion still.

But regarding work situations...probably nothing less than High Sierra at this present time (Nov 2020). It is compatible with most recent software, but many cut off compatibility or updates now with Mojave.

Mountain Lion for me also was a good OS and I still use it for some programs that did not update beyond or work better in Mountain Lion (like iDVD).

I actually still use Snow Leopard for some older programs, and sometimes boot up my MacBook 2010 to just play around with Snow Leopard because I just like it and also the overall feel of the MacBook Pro. Both Snow Leopard and the MacBook 2010 is still fast and I just had an overall great experience with it; probably just burned in my memory that SN is good OS. My USB 2 ports are faster than some of my USB 3 port on some of my other newer Macs (including wifi), which I am not sure why...?

I know the census is that we need to update because of security reasons, but if you don't go to a lot of weird or questionable websites and don't download much, generally older OS are secure. We are not at the stage in 2020 with the internet that things "Just" load on your system just by using it...(I am saying generally speaking..i.e. cookies etc.), so I am not concerned mostly with using older OS's to date.

Catalina itself has been pretty solid for me across two MBP 13s and a 2019 Mac Pro, but it's the apps that are included that have issues.

Examples:
- TV app: Have a movie in your library. Click in the Search field and search for it. It doesn't search your library; it searches the iTunes Store, so it might show you the movie you searched for, but it's £4.99 to buy and £3.49 to rent, etc. Why can't I search my own library?
- Books app: Add an audiobook with 5 chapters. It will show as one book in the list. How do you play the fourth chapter? You have to play the audiobook, then go to the tiny little playing window in the bottom left, and click the chapters icon to get the list of chapters up. Why?
- Finder: Plug in my iPhone, and select it from the Finder window's sidebar. Press Cmd + M to minimise the Finder window. This works fine. Now, close and open the window again, then click in the white space of the iPhone's view, i.e. anywhere on the General tab. Now try Cmd + M. Can't do it. This was raised in the betas. Still not fixed.

Well..the last supplemental update fixed the cpu and gpu throttling issue on my macbook pro 2018 and it is working better. Also, it fixed the issue with usb-c drives sometimes not being recognized when plugged into the usb-c port. I am happy about this.

Now...i will try again with mac pro 2013 and see if the throttling issue is gone using FCPX. My suspicion is that it was corrected concerning T2 programing, but probably not with non-T2 macs but will check and see.

If it fixed the mac pro 2013 issue, then Catalina is solid in my case.
