Hey folks

When using the airdrop to transfer photos from Iphone to MAC they have an extension of HEIC now, previous with older OS they used to be trasnferred as jpg.

Hmm, this isn't exactly a solution but a different route: I just pay the 99 cents a month for 50GB of iCloud storage then I simply let iCloud Photos do its job. Any photo taken on your iPhone is in the Photos app on your Mac in seconds/minutes. The you can drag and drop the photo from Photos.app to your desktop or wherever and it's automatically covered to a jpeg, but you still have the original HEIC in your Mac's Photos.app.

Does that help?

with the previous MAC OS X, i was able to transfer the photos with one click of a button using Air drop.
not sure why catalina screwed that up. I am really dissapointed with the new OS

This support article is very useful and covers all the questions you're asking, and more: https://support.apple.com/HT207022

The question is not whether the images are transferred to Mac as HEIC - the Mac can display and edit the file format in Preview, Photos, iMovie, Finder...

It's a matter of what you want to do with those images afterwards.

Are you planning to attach them to email? Mac Mail converts the file to JPG. The same happens if you're dropping them into Messages, uploading to Facebook, etc. via Safari.

After you airdrop the photo to your Mac, open the file in preview and export it to a JPG.

Or just switch the Camera app on iPhone to save JPEGs instead of HEIC:
