Cataloguing all my fonts

I have thousands of fonts and would like to create a PDF of them all for reference. I don't want open them all using Suitcase or FontBook as I'm sure it will crash my iMac. Is there a program that will allow me to do this?

Yeah, there are some nice programs for Windows :D (MainType, Printers Apprentice, FontExpert 2007, etc)

For Mac, all i know is the one from LemkeSoft: FontBook

Thanks. It's not bad but I don't like the layout of the font:

I would prefer something like this that displays it in one line [this is a screengrab from myfonts.com]:

It seems like FontExplorer X will allow you to export upto 100 fonts at a time to a .pdf. I have more than that activated right now, otherwise I'd test it out. Since I probably shouldn't have that many activated, if I get bored, maybe I'll start unactivating them...you're welcome to try in the meantime. :)

EDIT: Actually, I just exported a folder of fonts individually, and that worked great. Here is the result.

But that means activating them all and as I said, I have thousands. I like the Fontbook application mentioned above as you don't have to activate them but the layout of the fonts is not too good [see above]
 
FontAgent Pro from Insider Software.
We're using it to keep my college newspaper's font collection managed and it works like a dream. And we just bought the Adobe Font Folio, along with fonts we had bought over the year... and it manages them amazingly.
 
you can change the layout in font book to make it how you want. Look under layouts in the menu bar and tryout some of the multi options.

Actually, no. You don't have to activate them all...you'd just have to divide them up into sets of 100 or less. It still exports the inactive fonts.
 
I use fontExploreX and I can say that it is awesome!! I have like 1500 fonts on my laptop and only use a couple at a time.
 
Printing fonts and finding fonts are a complete nightmare. I used to work for the Houston Chronicle and they had giant binders full of fonts. There is no joy, absolutely no joy, in flipping through page after page looking for that one font.

For my own designs now I try to only use the Apple system fonts and when I have to I'll buy a font. You really only need a few complete families. Helps you focus on better design.

When you do print fonts out, print them out at small, medium, and large sizes. It makes a huge difference, but it'll add more pages to your catalog. I have an InDesign file that's just 1 font used in a bunch of different ways. I just change the style-sheet and it changes the font.

I had a similar question, is there a way to automatically organize my fonts in serifs, sans-serifs, scripts?
