This is a big problem. I can't even try uninstalling it because my Cydia is inside a categories folder, which is now gone. I can't turn on wifi to ssh in, because my Settings is in the same folder.

Any ideas?

edit: I just tried downloading WifiToggle.app which is supposed to be installed using Cydia, but I dropped it in iTunes instead. It added it and synced with no errors. but I don't see it on the springboard.

Ouch... This is what people mean when they say catagories is a dangerous app. Best way to recover your stuff is SSHing or thru iTunes. Otherwise...
Srry man

Update: I had to restore my iPhone as a new phone. It wasn't so bad. I just had to reenter all my passwords and stuff. My iTunes info, apps, music, etc was re-synced right after.

Next time I'll make sure to uninstall Categories before upgrading.

You don't need to uninstall it just take the applications out of them.

no u dont have to do another restore, just go to setting-general-restrictions-enable restriction-enter passcode-then disable restrictions again and everything will be back

credit goes to jromero for the solution

not good

I too have come across this problem with my jailbroken v2.2 3g. For some reason, this morning when I connected my phone to my pc to sync, it froze up and I ended up having to perform a restore. I had the Categories app installed prior to the restore. I had the categories set up such that the Settings icon is now gone as well as quite a few others, including cydia & installer.

Needless to say, I'm at a loss as to what to do about this. If it is a matter of ssh'ing into the phone, I can't get that to function right either. I cannot tell what IP address the phone has since I can't get into the Settings. I have tried setting up a bunch of different IP addresses and attempting to guess its current IP, but all have failed.

If anybody has any ideas as to correcing this, I would greatly appreciate it. I will also post if I find somehting as well. Thanks.

Thats your problem. A restore....restores it.

You have to re jailbreak and everything now.

I'm sorry. Forgot to include that as well. You are right. I have rejailbroken it prior to my original post. I'm guessing that the issue is that since I had installer and cydia in a folder they aren't showing up after the new jailbreak.

Also, a "related" question. After rejailbreaking would I need to reinstall all apps from cydia or would they have been part of the resore process? regardless, i would need to be able to get back the installer icons.

I've tried rebooting the phone by itself as well with no success.

still searching for a solution myself as well.

thanks for the help

progress

I found the way to restore your hidden Icons that were lost due to Categories app.

If you can ssh into your phone, that will work, otherwise I had to install a program on my pc to access the file structure of the phone. iPhoneBrowser will do it. I erased /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/com.apple.SpringBoard.plist after making a backup of it (just in case). After a quick reboot, everything you have from the apple app store is back as well as Cydia and Installer. The only issue is that all of the apps that I had installed through Cydia and Installer are missing. However, when I look in Cydia under Manage, it would appear that they aren't missing, they are truly gone. With a few quick installs everything will be okay.

I guess that when syncing with itunes and backing up your phone it doesn't back up anything that you have installed from Cydia. Is this correct? If thats true, does anyone know a way to truly back up your whole phone?

Anyway, thanks.

Whoops, forgot to cite the source I found with the info that helped:
