Categories or Quick Gold + SBSettings Combo?

Okay, so I'm new to the scene and I've took some time to read and experimented enough to realize that my phone is constantly lagging and not as snappy as a non-jailbroken unit.

I only have 2 pages of both native and App store apps but I love the fact how Categories has the capacity to organize everything quite nice and clean. With that being said, yesterday was a nightmare with Categories. I know it's risky and I didn't try anything stupid with the app but just as I was creating some folders, it relaunched the springboard and erased the folder that had Cydia, Installer and Categories. Needless to say, I was f'd.

I'm back up now. Restored to original and reinstalled QuickPwn. My question is simple, am I better off just using Quick Gold along with SBSettings or just Categories? I mean, I could just go old school and back to my two pages of icons with no theme and call it a day but I don't want to keep getting Low Memory messages and continue cruising down Lag City.

So does anyone think it's cleaner and uses less RAM to just hide all the unwanted icons with SBSetings and launch through Quick Gold? I got rid of custom keyboard, NES, BossPrefs since SBSettings takes it to the next level.

I use SBSettings + Categories. That way, if Categories ever messes up, I can unhide apps with SBSettings. (Apps you put in folders with Categories show up as "hidden" in SBSettings.) Oh, and keep Cydia and Settings unhidden. I think if you have just those two, you can pretty much get everything else back.

Thank you for your input Night Spring. That seems like a good combo but I'm starting to get a sour taste in my mouth by jailbreaking my phone. So far it's been nothing but frustrations and headaches. The phone keeps crashing and when it's up is lags like crazy. Right now, I have it plugged in and it's stuck at the boot screen. It won't even start up. It's been like that now for over an hour. I seriously applaud the jailbreak community but it's not perfect. I'm thinking of reverting my phone. Maybe.

Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time. I have a Touch and my partner has an iPhone, I've jailbroken both and they are both working smoothly -- we haven't experienced any significant slowdowns, and our devices don't seem to crash any more frequently than they did unjailbroken. I did initially have some problems with the iPhone, so what I ended up doing is this:

(1) Revert to a pre-jailbreak backup.
(2) Delete all installed apps by unchecking "sync apps" in iTunes.
(3) Create a backup of the iPhone w/o any apps.
(4) Jailbreak, restore to backup created in step 3.
(5) Put the apps back on.

After that, it's been working fine.

I've just stuck to using SBSettings for quick access to Bluetooth. I'll also occasionally use Cycorder for that quick moment but that's it. It's been perfectly stable for the past month.

However, I'm thinking of restoring to stock because it has yet to produce a valid backup (no date) since Jailbreaking. Without a valid backup you can't restore your app settings. I know I'll be losing a lot but at least I'll retain all the info I really need because it'll resync.

Yeah, I just restored mine to it's original state so I think that I'm going to hang back and keep reading the forums until jailbreaking is an absolute must. To me, Apple is just dropping the ball and that's why there's such an outcry in the hacking community. Some of the hacks just drive the iPhone's capabilities to edge of what it can handle with its limited RAM. Maybe with the next technical revision of the iPhone, we can have things like a proper camera, video and the ability to customize our phones without compromising or corrupting any files.

I have the utmost respect for the jailbreaking community and its contributors but as long as they're not making a proper living as modders and hackers, it will always be a hobby and thus no full-time dedication and focus can ever be geared towards the cause. I truly believe that if teams like BigBoss and others were making as much money as some of the developers behind the ridiculous and worthless apps like iFart and others, we'll have an immense influx and overpowering presence to the point where Apple would have no choice but to address the issues, bugs, lack of features and upgrade much more often and honestly listen to the members of the scene.

When people see the need to hack their phones just for something as simple as having the chance to do copy and paste, then that's when you know that you have a problem. I love my iPhone and so does everyone on here but it's not perfect. Even as the highest selling smart phone in the marketplace, it's not there yet. We only make up a very small percentage of the millions of iPhone owners who are constantly looking a way to better it's functions but sometimes I feel alone on the issue.

The vast majority people who jb their phone have absolutely no issues.

Just like every other product forum on the Internet, it's mostly people with problems (and whiners) post here. Most people are not going to start threads saying how well their jb'd iPhone is working.

I completely understand where you're coming from but maybe those whiners and complainers are too timid to come forward. I didn't say that I'm not ever going to jailbreak again, on the contrary. I'm just saying what most people are afraid to say for the fear of having their ideas or suggestions bashed.
