MP 1,1-5,1 Caution 10.14.6 & SATA PCIe SSDs (via Adapter)

Just a word of caution to anyone using SATA SSDs via PCIe adapter - they have "disappeared" more frequently at startup and after brief periods of inactivity with 10.14.6 18G84 than all other previous Mojave builds.

Have occasionally ran into this issue with previous Mojave builds with Apricorn Velocity Duo X2 and they ALWAYS have shown again on shutdown then restart. The majority of the time they were still accessible in finder, but not always shown on desktop or via shortcuts. Only once were they not accessible through an application.

It has now happened multiple times since installing 18G84 with these SATA SSD drives "disappearing" from the system. This machine never sleeps, but do use screen saver and monitor sleep (no machine sleep). These two particular SATA SSDs are Samsung EVO 850 1TBs and single partitions (no RAID involved). Both show 100% overall health in DriveDx, 100% overall performance rating, and 99% SSD lifetime left indication. There are no issues with the drives themselves.

Direct SATA bays are not impacted. All are loaded with SATA SSDs and have never disappeared. PCIe NVMe is system drive an also not impacted.

PS - Note to the mods on this forum. Prefix post tags really should allow specific MP5,1 or MP4,1-5,1 tagging. This issue likely has no impact on MP1,1-3,1 machines.
 
I updated yesterday and boot from an 850evo on an OWC Accelsior S and I've not had issues, I wonder if yours stems from you adapter.
 
These are not boot drives. Issue has been happening since around 10.14.2 or 10.14.3, but has been happening more often with latest 10.14.6 build. It's not a repeatable issue and there is nothing that 100% triggers. Just a word of caution to anyone using.

You’d think it wouldn’t make a difference

How about Innie... have you tried that?
 
No need for Innie, am not ejecting the drives and really don’t care if they’re appearing as external. They’re media use only.

Reported these same issues in another thread months ago. Just happening more frequently than it was back then. It could be a make/break for some people.

I just wonder if they're ejecting because OSX see's them as external?

I really don't have a solution I'm just spitballing

I have the same PCI card and SSD. I have troubles since I use APFS and Mojave. Kernel panics on wake up after sleep and disk error warnings. I consider to format the SSD into HFS+

I reformatted the SSD into APFS and the warnings (directory valence check: directory (oid 0x70050): orphan directory record) are gone. But when I boot in the safe mode, it takes approx. 4 minutes before the login window appears. And when I run disk utility then I still get the message that the disk need to be repaired.
"Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting".
When I boot in the normal mode no errors are found at this moment.
I often switch from startup disk: I run High Sierra on a SATA II OWC SSD in one of my drive bays and Mojave on the Samsung mounted on the Accelsior. When I switch the startup disk to the Accelsior after booting High Sierra, the startup time is 90 sec. When I reboot from Mojave to Mojave the startup time is 40 sec. TRIM is enabled.
DriveDX reports that all my disks are OK.
JedNZ. I am just curious how long it takes to boot in the safe mode on your MacPro.

Safe Boot does take a few minutes on my Accelsior S. There's a whole lot of stuff that happens when you Safe Boot - including cron utilities that clean up cache files etc (more here). At a guess, my system takes 4+ minutes in Safe Boot to the Login screen. Normal boot from power-on takes 20 seconds to POST (ta daa! chime), then another 40 secs to Login window.

I'd be tempted to format the drive completely again using a different format (FAT, NTFS etc), then go back and format again to APFS GUID.

JedNZ. If you boot in the safe mode and run Disk utility, do you get this message too?
(select Samsung SSD 850, not the container Disk or the Macintosh HD)
The disk needs to be repaired.
Problems were found with the partition map which might prevent booting.
