Hi All,

Recently installed a WD 1TB Caviar Black HD into my iMac(2007), as its original WD 320GB Caviar SE HD was dying on me. Wanted to get some opinions on the noise levels from anyone who's done the same thing or uses the Caviar Black. Do you find it significantly noisier than the original HDs or alternatives? May be minor for some, but being used to a virtually silent computer for over 2 years, the noise that the Black creates can be a bit irritating.

I don't know whether to just deal with it for the sake of increased performance etc etc (also planning to sell later on to help fund a new Mac purchase, so noise may be an issue in regards to that).

Lastly, does anyone know of quieter alternatives with similar/better performance?

Thanks a lot.

I JUST got done installing a 1gb WD Caviar Black in to my 2010 27" iMac. This drive is in addition to a 500gb Seagate Momentus XT system drive.

The Caviar Black was pretty noisy, tho not as noisy as the Seagate that it came with. I booted in to Windows 7 and ran a program called "HDDScan" this allowed me to select the "quiet" AAM setting which almost completely silenced my drive. It's PERFECT.

It also allowed me to turn off the advanced power management on my Seagate Momentus XT, hopefully that solves the random spin down issues that these drives have. Time will tell on that one.
