This might seem like a stupid question but I wanted to ask before I bought an external SSD.

I'd like to create a bootable backup of my iMac 512GB SSD using CCC should it ever fail. I'm looking to get a 500GB T5 as the external drive.

Can I create a bootable copy of my 512GB internal drive on a 500GB external drive? I'll have nowhere like 512GB of actual data but do the partitions need to be equal sizes in order to clone?

Thanks, but not really the question I was asking......

Can an iMac with a 512GB SSD be cloned to a smaller device such as the 500GB T5? Do the partitions have to be the same size to work or is it based on the actual amount of data on the iMac? Sorry if I wasn't clear in the question I asked.

Yes it's possible as long as the clone you're creating with CCC does not exceed the available space of the 500GB T5. In any event, CCC will warn you if there is not enough space to create the clone.
