I am still waiting on my 7,1, but trying to prepare.

Mine is coming with a 1TB SSD which will be the boot volume and hold my apps, etc.

Is it possible to create a bootable clone of the factory installed SSDs from Apple that are tied to the T2 chip (as I understand)? I was thinking of installing some 3rd party 1TB SSD and have Carbon Copy Cloner auto-copy to that drive every night. That is how I have it set up on my current 5,1 with 2 internal SSDs on a PCI card - one is the boot drive and one is a bootable clone. Just not sure if this will work on the 7,1 and the T2?

Yes, it's possible. I configured my 7,1 this way. You'll need to enable "External Boot" in "Startup Secuity Utility". See the Apple docs. You might also need to change the "Secure Boot" setting using the same utility. I'm not 100% sure since I'd already disabled it.

CCC will actually explain this when you set it up. Don't forget to actually test your clone once you get it going! ;)

that's great advice. i was new to CCC and did test it out with a boot up. It worked great! also, i made sure to have two separate boot up files in CCC; one older and one very new.
