Basically just that. Before it was pretty loud as it is, but now its twice as loud, and it sounds like a Cesna! I can't really use the cd drive in public anymore... its just WAY too loud.

Its a Powerbook 1.5Ghz Rev D. I bought it last summer, so its still under warranty. What should I do?

(btw, is it possible to use my built-in microphone to record the sound for you guys?)

edit: misspelled aeroplane

I'd look into buying an optical drive cleaner (CD cleaner) maybe. Hopefully it's just dust build up. :)

You could try it with Garageband but I'm not sure how well it'll turn out.

I don't think its dust build up. The slot is protected.... and its always kept clean. As well, JUST dust couldn't possibly be making that awful sound.

Whats the best way of claiming warranty? I haven't bought the applecare, so I won't be able to phone them :( .

If there's any tape or whatnot on the CD, it will become off-balanced, resulting in your computer sounding like an airplane.
Just a thought...... :)

Mmm. Well it sounds like a airplane with all the CDs i put in, so it can't be that.

I tried using a cleaner disk just recently and it didn't help unfortunately. I'm going to check out Apples website and see what I should do....

my optical drive on my iBoook g4 is really loud, I think they all are. Maybe I wouldn't say an 'airplane', but you can clearly hear it very well when just sitting around.

I know what you mean. But now, when it spins up, instead of the loud whirring noise, i get a really loud thumping noise like a propeller aeroplane.

I went to the Apple website, I found my problem there and all it said was to 'Contact Apple'. Does that mean I can phone them? I don't have the extended warranty, so I don't have any phone support. I suppose I'll phone them on Monday and see what happens.

And say I do send it away to them, would they do anything to my hardrive? Should I back it up?

I'll keep you guys posted.
