Do you miss it or not?

I'm just curious.

I was going to go with the Air, but i didn't because of itunes and what have you.
Yeah, you could do the external deal... but it just seemed to defeat the purpose of the incredible streamline design to have to lug that around too.

Haven't missed the drive at all. I can just share a drive wirelessly if I need one. It's designed not to need it :)

+1

The share drive feature works great. For some apps like WinXP that "needs" a CD/DVD drive, I simply created an ISO image on a USB drive then mounted it...:)

I bought the external drive, it was a waste of money. I have only used it twice and that was just for the novelty of it. I could easily have used .iso files for that too.

really?!?
See, i totally didnt know that!
I saw that there was no CD and i was like "whaaaaat? forget that!" LOL
well that's very cool then!!

Yes it is really cool. Apple makes it VERY easy to wirelessly share a CD/DVD drive on another Mac or PC and use it the Air. Honestly I have re-installed Leopard(to streamline it) and have installed software on my Air using my Macbook Pro's drive. It was very easy. Installing software is pretty much all I have ever used a CD/DVD drive for anyways...and with this technique, you won't miss it on the Air ;)

Now a days where people use iTunes to listen to music and even buy or rent movies, who needs a CD or DVD anymore...especially when it takes up so much valuable space on a laptop? Welcome to the future. Welcome to the Air :)

I don't use an optical drive enough to miss it. I'd be more than happy to have some fewer ounces or better, a much bigger battery in my MBP instead of the superdrive, and keep a superdrive in my desk.

I purchased the optical drive for the macbook air "just in case" a month ago, and honestly, it is still in the shrink-wrap. I probably should have held off on the purchase as a future imac is in the picture for which I could utilize the remote disk application but I was worried about the potential that I may need to have it prior to my purchase. I cant return it for a full refund at this point, so, I will hold it, just in case.

Same here, still in the shrink wrap. I guess it will finally be used when I upgrade iLife.

Every now and again I'll have someone (a customer or a friend) give me a project on a DVD. But for the most part the answer is no.
