CD-DVD Drive Not Recognized- Will Not Eject CD

Hi Everyone.
I am a new Mac user and I am having a problem with the CD drive. I have an iBook G4 - 1 Ghz notebook with a slot loading drive. I got the computer from my sister who had given up on it after she spilled some champagne into the keyboard. She got the keyboard fixed but the drive did not work afterwards and the repair for the machine was so costly she just decided to buy a new one. Her loss was my gain as she gave me the laptop and I thought I could replace the drive and be good to go. I always wanted to learn the Mac OS and this seemed like a great opportunity. The machine runs pretty well but I would like the disk to work.
Now on to my problem.
I purchased a working drive and installed it today but it is not recognized by the OS. I did not replace the cable to the drive but all looked pretty clean inside the case as I dived into it. It was kind of a tedious process but it went well. I stuck a cd in the drive and can hear and feel it spinning but the disk is not recognized and it will not eject. I am looking for advice in where to go from here to get this working properly.

The "normal" way to eject a stuck CD is to hold the trackpad button while booting the computer (ie. at the startup tone). However, it wouldn't surprise me if this doesn't work for you. Does the replacement drive have an eject hole?

If the interface on the logic board is damaged, then you'll probably need to use an external FireWire drive instead - hopefully you can return the drive you just bought if this is the case.

There is not an eject hole. That was what I looked for first. I tried the touchpad idea and it did not work. The champagne did not seem to have entered the case too far. The ribbon to the drive was clean and when I inspected it at the time I thought that maybe the drive had not been damaged from the spill.

Since the mouse button didn't work, I doubt this will, but it's worth a try.

During startup, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F key combination to enter Open Firmware, type eject cd (in lower case letters), then press return.
