The super drive on my MBP has stopped reading CD's/DVD's completely. Everything i put in gets spat out. Is there anything i can do short of taking it back to apple?

Well, you can reset the PMU but it probably won't help. At least you can tell the people at Apple that you've already tried it though. 
They sell optical drive cleaning discs from most HiFi/music shops. They cost about $10 here, so they aren't too expensive. Try that before you take it in
