cd ejects without reading, dvds work fine

Every CD I insert into my macbook (aug 06) -- data, commercial music, burned music -- just spins for about 20 seconds or so and then ejects without ever registering on the desktop or in itunes. DVDs play fine. My OS and my iTunes are updated (7.3.2). My drive permissions are fine. Ideas?
