I inserted a CD on my IMAC and the icon doesn't show up. When I restart my computer it does. But not when I first insert it. I hate having to close all my aps to restart every time I put a CD in.

It just started doing this after I did a routine update of some aps that was volunteered by my IMAC. Not sure if that has to do with it or not. May be a coincident.

You're holding wrong.... sorry, had to say that.

What were the apps that were recently updated? Something there might give us a clue.

Check the following under Finder Preferences:
  • General -> "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" is checked under "Show these items on the desktop".
  • Sidebar -> "CDs, DVDs, and iPods" is checked under "Devices".
If those don't work, also use Disk Utility and do a Disk Permissions Repair.

After both of these are done, let us know if you still have the problem.

I m having the same problem after installation of macos Mojave. The icon of CD drive (when i inserted the CD in drive) not showing in finder/desktop. please help me if anyone have soluation

Are you running any particular OS on your iMac? Just curious in case i’s important.

I have fixed this issue by resetting the NV RAM.

If running El Capitan or later, you won’t be able to do this. It won’t fix this issue anyway.

The other suggestions are good, though.
