CD/optical drive only reads Audio CDs

I looked about but can't find my specific problem on here, so....

As the title suggests.... although I recall it will read the OSX installation discs.

Other than that, it can't read DVDs/DVD roms or CD roms
Tried the PRAM thing and no change.

Same problem on an older macbook pro, but thought it was just due to age.
This one is 2 years old, had had this problem for the last year but it's never been issue until recently as I've bought new hardware that needs drivers installed and have the manuals on disc.

Any ideas why? No knocks or bangs etc, I look after this better than I would my first born.

What is it? Some info would be nice. What model Mac? What model superdrive? Aftermarket DVD player? What are you using to read the discs?

Regular Macbook pro 13 inch....standard everything
It's 2 years old, so what ever was standard back then I guess. No aftermarket stuff

Okay here's a list of media types...

• CD Audio
• CD-ROM
• CD-R (Audio or Data)
• DVD-ROM
• DVD-VIDEO
• DVD-R/DVD+R (Video or Data)

Which of these can you read/play? And which don't read? If CD's work and DVDs don't, the drive is faulty. CDs and DVDs use different laser frequencies.

Also, recordables have some slight differences in how they are handled for playback.

In truth it sounds like your drive may be broken from what you said.

Probably want to post in the correct forum then. This is for Mac Pro the Desktop Workstation. Slot load drives have much more problems on average than desktop readers. They are much more finicky to the medium you put in them.
