CD-R disk problems on New iMac?

I've viewed some DVD's on my new 2.8GHz iMac and all was well. I just tried to look as some pictures that my father burned onto a Memorex CD-R disk with his PC and it seemed like the drive didn't recognize the disk. I tried a couple times but it just repeated a noise maybe a half dozen times, then ejected the disk. The noise is a familiar noise that usually only happens once when a drive is starting to read a disk.

I checked and the disk works fine on my old Dell laptop. Does a windows machine somehow burn the data differently? That would surprise me. Any ideas what might be wrong?

The problem isn't likely to be your iMac and certainly has nothing to do with mac vs windows (Macs read Windows-burned CDs without problems).

Most likely reason is that your father's CD burner may be a tad out of alignment, which means that some drives will read it and some won't. Slot-loading drives (such as that in the imac) tend to be a little fussier on disk quality than tray-loaders.

I don't know how to see what drive I have. It's whatever comes w/ the new 2.8GHz Imac. My father has a fairly old Plextor CD_R writer. The model number is PX-W1210A.

Go to Applications / utilities / System Profiler then click on disk Burning it will tell you the make of drive etc. like this - which is mine.

Hmm, I tried a CD-R of and XP iso on our new iMac 20" and it didn't work either. Didn't think anything of it at the time, but later was wondering what the deal was. Burned CD-R work fine in my regular DVD player. I'll have to try another one. My iMac has the gradient issue, but so does the my new 1440 x 900 Dell display at work. My iMac also has one stuck red pixel.

Yep same drive as mine.
Browsing through some older TDK CD-R's made Finder hang a couple of times.
Just some old jpg's and game roms, nothing exotic.
I did the browsing in list view, as if I instinctively knew the system would have a hard time in column view with preview activated...
Opening a folder in list-view, just clicking the little arrow icon to open the folder made the spinning beach ball appear and it kept spinning forever.

A brand new machine with 2.4 Ghz Intel duo core processor, 4GBs of RAM is having trouble browsing through some really small files, like 4 kb Atari roms....???
