Thanks for any suggestions on a CD ripper that can rip my cd's with the following capabilities:
  • can rip to wav and flac audio formats
  • can identify the artist and song title for each track
  • can list the artist and song title for each track after ripping
I'm looking for an alternative to Apple Music because this software only records the song title and not the artist for each audio track. Thanks for any suggestions.

I have been using XLD but I experience various problems with it.
  • I can't seem to make XLD the default software over Apple Music. As a result, I always have to close Apple Music 2-3 times before it stops opening up as the default software for cd's.
  • Finally, when XLD gets activated, I have to click on it's: File > "Open audio CD" option 2-3 times before it actually starts ripping the CD.
  • Often, XLD will crash with this error message: "XLD quit unexpectedly. Terminating app due to uncaught exception. Reason: NSRunCritialAlertPanel may only be invoked from the main thread. Behavior on other threads is undefined." Since I don't understand what the error message means from the above description, I can't "solve" the problem (see the attached screenshot).
  • I have XLD version 20230627 (156.1) which is the latest version with the latest updates.
  • Maybe XLD is conflicting with the Apple Music application, but the Apple Music app cannot be deleted to test that theory. I'm using Mac Mini (late 2014) and Mac OSX Catalina (10.15.7). But even when Catalina was the latest OSX, I found that XLD still had these bugs as noted above.

I'm thinking that you could use the free "RCDefaults" preference pane to control this.

It's now discontinued by its author but it's still available here:
I've used it with Monterey and still works.

You would use the Defaults pref pane to set the apps you need in the "media" area, I think...

I've used fre:ac, too.

Currently, I've sent an email to the developer to address error messages I receive using it (see attachment).
For whatever reason, it's CDDB database to identify the artist and song title for each track isn't working for me.

The error messages says that I should "downgrade" the version I'm using, but there is only one version available for
my Mac desktop computer (Mac Mini, early 2014, Catalina 10.15.7).

Otherwise, I like using fre:ac as an alternative to the Apple Music app.

Thanks, bogdanw. An earlier version of freac works well with my OSX, Catalina.

Now I'm trying to configure freac to be the default app over Apple Music.
I'm trying out RCDefaults as posted by fishrrman. No luck so far.

Check your System Settings - CDs & DVDs
there are setting what should happen when you insert a Music CD, I guess it's set to open Music. There you can choose a different app, or do nothing.

Great, now Apple Music stops opening up when a music CD is inserted into the drive.
Now I would like freac to open automatically and start ripping when a CD is inserted.

I believe I have that configured in freac settings under Automatization.
See the attached screenshot for an illustration.

Given those custom settings for when a CD is inserted in the drive, so far the freac app does not respond to that.
I can still open freac manually and manually start the ripping process, which is okay if it doesn't work automatically.

After installing RCDefaultApps, go to Settings > RCDefaultApps > Media tab and set all CD options in there.

I will "X" XLD for this. Have been using it for years now and pretty much stopped looking for alternatives. I rip everything to FLAC.

I'm trying it out. Is there a way to change the location of where the ripped songs are located. The default seems to be in Macintosh HD > Users > Music.
There is a dropdown labelled 'Output To' before you click convert.
