i have a c2d mb and i stuck a cd in the drive to see what it was, at first it didnt appear then i got a beach ball for like 5 mins then the cd appears but the beach balls still on and i cant eject it or turn off the computer normally so i held down the power and restarted it and the same thing happend what could i do?

also, is there another way to see if something is connected to your computer or a disc is in, other than the one that appears on the desktop?

Launching DiskUtility will generally tell you that. Sometimes a drive can show up as connected but never mount, so it wont appear on the desktop, you can mount it in DiskUtility.

System Profiler will tell you everything you want to know. It is in your Applications>Utilities folder (or go to Apple Menu>About this Mac>More Info).
