Okay, i am really frustrated becuase I am in finals and I took my ibookG4 to the Apple store yesterday to get help ejecting a cd rom that was stuck in the optical drive. It turns out it was a software problem and the "genius" fixed it and we tested it by putting in a new cd and seeing if it would show up on the desktop and eject. It did. So, now that it it working again, i popped in a new cd and the same problem is happening. :(

I tried doing open firmware and eject cd during the restart ... but it won't let me...yet it worked yesterday at apple.

can anyone help me????

Did you try holding down the Mouse button throughout a restart?

My former iBook had the CD-tray somewhat cockeyed, so the door touched the body - the edge of the 'bezel', and it had to be gently coaxed with a fingernail to overcome the friction and open.

Restart won't work. You have to SHUT DOWN and start up again. Try it a couple times, holding down the mouse button before pressing the power button (and continuing until the CD comes out) and starting to hold it immedietly after, I can't remember which works.

i tried that ... but the main problem is that it is a software problem. the computer won't even recognize that it even has an optical drive ... so not only is the cd not being read, it doesn't exist!!!

Try the following:

1) boot to open firmware (restart and hold Apple Option O F) All four on startup.

2) type: reset-all (no spaces) <return>
the computer will now restart - try ejecting your disk now.

If not:
boot back to open firmware and type: eject cd <return>
If the CD does not eject or it tells you the device is not responding then the drive needs replacing.
