I'd love to be drooling over a shiny new iPhone, but unfortunately AT&T has horrible reception in my area and the people I call all use Verison. Essentially, buying an iPhone wouldn't make sense for me ($600 for a convergent device is rational)

When will Verizon wise up and allow Apple full reign to incorporate the iPhone into their network with no software crippling?

AT&T's exclusive contract with the iPhone is for 5+ years so it's too late for Verizon right now. They screwed the pooch. If you are married to Verizon then you are looking at iPhone version 12 or something...maybe.
