message : "An error occurrd while verifying the disc. This
disc may not work
."

. . occurs half-way through the over-all burning process ..

Towards hoping to redemy the problem, so far I've tried a different (recommended) brand of blank CDs, . . and run some maintenance and defragmentation utilities.

Appreciate any help.

hello MJ ..

Essentially I'm just attempting to burn different stored, weather-related satellite images, out of the finder.

In addition to what I've said above regarding my basic problem, with my machine (an "eMac") being factory partitoned (OS 10.3.9 /0S 9.2), where having discovered my problem initially with working on the OS 10 side, .. I've comfirmed that it also reaches over into the OS 9 side.

And, more, with respect to your "applications" question above, .. I have in fact - oddly, "not had trouble" burning music files . . out of "iTunes".

Yes. (.. to the speed change.)

Also, upon suggestion - appreciated from elsewhere, bought and tried a "lens cleaner".

To no avail.

The fact iTunes doesn't give you this warning has me stumped. Just out of interest, even though the verification fails, do the discs actually work?

Hard Drive space, 13.5 left of 80 Gigs total, (hello A-lo el)

Should be (?).. enough to cover what I'm trying to do.

___

Per your question, MJ, . .

. . regarding - (presumably) - stopping the burning process / operation - better put, "mid-way" as it were, before verification ...

Here, I've tried stopping the broader process at a number of different points; . . including the most logical apart from merely waiting for it to run through its main, un-interupted course; . . i.e. post .. "actual burn", and previous to the "verification" process - more specifically.

I bet the disks work fine.

This happens to me on one of my drives all the time in Toast. It claims there is a bad sector (and I'm sure there is), but it doesn't prevent the disk from being usable.

Two solutions: try different media (and make sure the surface looks spotless); try a different burner (only works if you have a different burner, of course).

Does iTunes even "verify"? The only times in Toast you can "verify" a disk is if it is a data disk (DVD or CD).

Sorry mate, I've got no idea what you're saying here. I'm just wondering if, despite claiming to fail the verification process, the discs still display the information you burnt to them.

Try Disco

I enjoy Disco.
http://www.discoapp.com/disco.dmg

Remember to set the disc type before burning. It will burn several types of discs, and you should check to verify what it is defaulting for.

It supports drag and drop.

I often burn discs for windows using friends which work fine.

Nope.

For reference, again, rounding my problem - essentially, a given CD being coughed up in the midst of trying to burn (most types of) material, ..

So far:

Have tried different brand of CDs ..

.. burning at various speeds.

Done general maintenance, defrag.

Tried a "lens cleaner".

___

Regarding "numediaman's" iTunes-related question above ..

Where trying to burn material "from" iTunes, .. all goes normally, i.e. the burning process runs its natural course / .. the CD I've inserted, doesn't get coughed up, in the middle of the burning process. (?)

I've been dealing with this same issue on my G4 iMac for the last 2+ years. I've essentially given up burning CDs on it and transfer my files to my laptop and do it there which is a pain in the butt.

I've been down this path many times trying to solve this issue so let me tell you what I've tried that hasn't helped.

I've tried using different media. Still fails.

I've tried using different burning speeds. Still fails.

I've tried attaching an external CD burner and using that. Still fails. (Yes, you read that right... a different external CD burner... fails to verify.)

I've tried different software like Toast. Still fails.

I've tried doing an archive and install of the OS. Still fails.

I've tried running "Rember" to test the RAM as faulty memory can cause the verification error and it never finds any faulty RAM.

I've tried zipping the files and burning them (someone on a forum suggested that perhaps the files in place on the drive and being changed somehow so verification can't happen.) Still fails.

From what I can tell, my tests have ruled out both hardware, software and OS issues. As I've said, I've given up. I burn CDs on my laptop and don't bother with it anymore. If anyone has any ideas, I'm open to them, but I've pretty much given up on it.

Strangely, I can still burn music CDs in iTunes, but I suspect that audio CDs are far more "fault tolerant" in that one or two bits written wrong won't ruin the audio. I suspect that iTunes doesn't go through a verification process.

i had this problem...most expensive lens cleaner you can and buy the most expensive CD/DVD you can (single in a jewel case)....try burning this (with various programs e.g. the mac itself (data disc), toast and any other app u have)...if this doesn't work, frankly your disc drive is broken
