I am thoroughly convinced that cel animation is dead. I really wish it wasn't,

but the fact of the matter is that computers are replacing those good old

fashioned cels. As a tribute and farewell to cel animation, my friend and I

decided to do one. Let me know what you think. It took about a month of

working on it for an hour a day, but I have to say, it was rewarding in the

end.

I don't think cell animation will ever die - that's like saying film photography will be replaced by digital.

As a medium for an artform, there will always be someone who uses it.

Although I agree that there will almost always be cel animation, but when looking at the mainstream, it is all but gone, except for anime of course;)

Great movie! You had me in stitches, ahahaha....

I love it when people put a ridiculous amount of effort into something just for the fun of it. That's definitely the meaning of life :p

A lot of anime is still drawn in Cell shading. I prefer it over CG
According to someone on another forum I frequent, who is involved in the anime industry (I don't know with what company, or in what capacity, I do know he was able to go back-table, and meet Yoshitoshi ABe at Comiket  ), most anime goes from sketches to digital ink now. I'd give you a link to the specific post, but the forum is down at the moment.

Now, regarding cels themselves, they aren't made to last any longer than necessary. They're drawn, inked, shot, then pretty much tossed. Some find their way to collectors, but most are in a dump somewhere in Japan (or Florida, California, or South Korea).

thats not bad. what did you use to capture each picture? and what did you use to edit it?

Some of the old Disney cells are worth big $$$$.

I used my Sony HandyCam and iStopMotion to capture the frames, and then I exported frames in DV to imovie.

Although I appreciate the look of cell animation, it's days are numbered. It may not be today or tomorrow, but call it 5 years. All you have to do is compare the CGi effects from 5 years ago with the CGI of today to see what can be done in 5 years. It's getting more difficult all the time to tell what's filmed and what's created. If they can create an artificial human on the screen, don't you think they can create the cell effect via CGI.

They already do, and have done for years. I think pretty much all of Disney's movies since the early '90s have had CGI sequences that use a cel (not cell ;) ) shading filter. It's still not really the same though.

Just the look of something done on computer, it seems a little cheesy to me. I guess I don't like the colors quite as much.

Hey, I know almost nothing about anime and would probably not like it, but I can tell a lot of work went into this (knowing a bit of what it takes) and while not exactly marketable, I can tell you and your friend had a good time doing this.

Congrats! ;)
